Uber Works: A pivot or a prayer?
Uber has introduced Uber Works. A shift work matching app that hopes to efficiently connect workers with gigs that fit their schedules. The app is currently available in Chicago. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are about to dramatically change the world of on-demand car services. Viewed through that lens, Uber and Lyft’s current business models are doomed Continue Reading →

Delano Martin - The Next 24
I met Delano Martin yesterday. He’s been shot twice, and he spends his days trying to figure out how to stay alive. Before I tell you how Delano and I came to meet, I want you to read one of his poems. Continue Reading →
facebook like
CNET reports that Facebook may soon start hiding likes on News Feed posts. The company already tested a similar move on Instagram in August as a way to help break users' fixation with getting likes on their pictures. This is a spectacular idea. Everything about it will be better for everyone, except... are we not so addicted to the endorphin rush caused by accumulating likes that we will see it elsewhere? Continue Reading →
Instagram got us hooked on likes. What happens when they're gone?
One of my very favorite Facebook executives is famous for saying, "Likes are not a business outcome." This is absolutely true. Metamerica
I wrote an article back in April 2009 entitled Metamerica: Evolving The Governance Of A Digital Democracy. It begins, “Dateline New York: April 3, 2021” with breaking news about a massive, catastrophic data breach. So how would the Great Data Crash of 2021 happen? Or, perhaps more importantly, why have the questions I posed in 2009, and the very clear predictions of known consequences of our digital society, not only gone unanswered by our leaders but in many cases gone unasked? Let’s look back to help us see the future. Continue Reading →

Mark Chernichaw
Some teachers inspire you. Some teachers change your life. Mark Chernichaw, Associate Professor of Film and Television, taught Intermediate Television at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts from 1972-1982. The course was focused on the production and direction of television, and Mark’s classes were legendary. Continue Reading →

Smart Home: Is the Time Right?

Shelly Palmer and Jane Jetson
Since we first met the Jetsons on September 23, 1962, the idea of a smart home has enthralled us. In the 56 years since the show’s premiere, technology has advanced in ways Hanna-Barbera could never have dreamed of, yet we’re no closer to a world where Rosie the Robot is real. What gives?
