Let’s Go Mets! 40th Anniversary

Let's Go Mets!

The Mets are not having their best year, but this summer marks the 40th anniversary of one of their best.

By July 1986 the Pennant was a lock and the New York Mets were destined for greatness. Advertising legend, Jerry Della Femina, and two of his senior executives, Bob Sherman and John Olken, hired me to compose and produce an official theme song and create and produce a music video (along with a “making-of” documentary) for the team. The video premiered on August 30, 1986 on DiamondVision at Shea Stadium. The song, “Let’s Go Mets” (aka “Let’s Go Mets Go!”) was a gold record and the VHS video was certified triple platinum.

The project was pure 80s fun. You can listen (and watch) here.

A special shout-out to Greg Smith, who co-composed and arranged the song, and to the late Hal Hackady, who wrote the lyrics. Heartfelt thanks to my dear friend Alan Meyerson (quite simply, the best recording engineer in the world) and to the musicians whose extraordinary talent made the sessions magical: Ira Siegel (guitar), Vince Fay (bass), Alan Schwartzberg (drums), Pete Levin (keyboard), and the incredible Tommy Bernfeld (lead vocals). Kudos as well to Wayne Nelson Page, who line-produced the music video, and a super special shout-out to Donna Miller, who directed and produced the making-of documentary.

Every production is a story. “Let’s Go Mets!” was no exception. One day, I’ll write a book about how insane this process truly was. Until then, every rumor you’ve heard about the 1986 Mets is likely true. Oh, and whoever said, “Never meet your heroes,” never met the 1986 NY Mets. They truly were the dream team!

BTW: My journey from music and video focused to tech focused is not as surprising as it sounds. Feel free to ask me about it sometime.
