SPRINT NEXTEL has chosen SAMSUNG to provide the infrastructure for its WiMax service in New York. Samsung is also providing the infrastructure in Washington D.C., Boston, and other cities. The service, called Xohm, is expected to launch in Washington D.C. in April 2008, and will follow in NY towards the end of next year.

AKAMAI has declared that its global Content Delivery Network is now ready to deliver High Definition video. The company said that its network has been fine-tuned to ensure fast, uninterrupted delivery of high-def video files. Akamai has servers in over 750 cities. It has set the goal of delivering 100 terabits of traffic per second.

SOCIAL NETWORKING sites continue to be snapped up at a rapid pace. Hi-Media Group, a Paris-based ad firm, has purchased New York-based Fotolog for about $90 million. Fotolog is a photo-sharing and social-networking site that has achieved popularity in South America. Johnson & Johnson’s BabyCenter also snapped up Maya’s Mom, a social-networking site for mothers.

VERIZON has added FiOS service to 15 additional New York towns and cities. The service is now available in 120 New York communities.

CNN has added a “web anchor” to its roster. Reporter Reggie Aqui will anchor a Webcast and cover breaking news for the CNN.com. He will also cover the biggest web stories of the day for CNN and Headline News.

FOX has launched FoxHiLites.com, a site dedicated to local high school sports. The local-networking site encourages users to discuss and upload video from local sports events, with the opportunity to have them broadcast on TV. It is available in 23 cities, including Chicago and LA.
