The European Parliament is advancing toward the West's first AI regulations with the "European AI Act." This new law proposes a risk-based approach to AI regulation, categorizing AI applications into four risk tiers: unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal or no risk. Continue Reading →
Anthropic's LLM, Claude, just got a substantial upgrade: its context window has been expanded from 9K tokens to an impressive 100K tokens, equating to around 75,000 words. This expansion is significant, allowing businesses to submit hundreds of pages for Claude's analysis, which enables more extended and in-depth dialogues. Continue Reading →

Of Mice and AI

Mouse watching movie
A machine learning algorithm called CEBRA is unlocking the hidden structure in neural code, with the potential to revolutionize brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). The algorithm can be used to decode what a mouse sees while watching a movie, predict primate arm movements, and reconstruct the positions of rats as they roam. The research, led by Mackenzie Mathis, EPFL’s Bertarelli Chair of Integrative Neuroscience, was published in Nature. Continue Reading →

AI Goes to Washington

White House
The White House announced AI-focused initiatives ahead of a meeting with top tech CEOs from Alphabet, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Microsoft. Key actions include allocating $140 million in funding to seven new National AI Research Institutes and holding an independent exercise with major tech players to assess generative AI systems' adherence to the Biden administration's AI Bill of Rights blueprint. Microsoft is planning to offer dedicated, private ChatGPT servers as early as next month. A private installation of ChatGPT (in the Azure cloud, of course) would allow a business to keep its proprietary data separate and safe. When it launches, this will be "the" product of the year. Generative AI has presented the music industry with new challenges. You've probably heard about the AI-generated song featuring cloned vocals of Drake and The Weeknd. It went viral, but was taken down because Universal Music Group (UMG) claimed copyright violations. (I'm not sure if copyright laws actually apply here.) Continue Reading →
Artificial intelligence has given everyone the ability to easily create audio deepfakes. Now what? Shelly Palmer speaks with Dan Bowens and Tashanea Whitlow on Fox 5's Good Day New York about the technology, ways to protect yourself and your voice, and how worried we should be. Continue Reading →

“War Games” IRL

Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Representatives Ted W. Lieu (CA-36), Don Beyer (VA-08), and Ken Buck (CO-04) introduced the bipartisan and bicameral Block Nuclear Launch by Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Act legislation to safeguard the nuclear command and control process from any future change in policy that allows AI to make nuclear launch decisions. Trust Nothing
For reasons that are theorized – but not fully understood – human beings "default-to-trust." This strategy has stood the test of time. We generally trust others until given a reason to do otherwise. However, as the output from large language models and generative AI becomes increasingly indistinguishable from that produced by humans, it's time to consider a new paradigm: "default to distrust."
