Suno CEO Mikey Shulman published a post titled “How We’re Building the Future of Music Responsibly.” The post announces updated community guidelines that explicitly prohibit recreating existing songs and cloning voices without permission, audio watermarking and fingerprinting rolling out in the coming weeks, content screening through Audible Magic and Musixmatch, and a new downloads policy designed to limit mass distribution of AI tracks to streaming services.
In June 2024, the major labels sued Suno. Warner settled in November 2025 and is the only major with a Suno licensing deal. Universal and Sony are still litigating in federal court in Massachusetts, where the case has narrowed to one question: was training on copyrighted recordings fair use? Suno’s own filings effectively concede the recordings are in the training data, so fair use is the only defense left standing.
If you remember, YouTube built Content ID while Viacom’s lawsuit was pending, then converted copyright enforcement into a licensing business that has paid rights holders billions. That playbook would work here, too. Just launch, train on everything, settle, then build the identification layer that converts your legal liability into your moat. We’ll see if they follow it.
This is mostly about control. The fingerprint database equals monetization. If you license music, ask who controls identification and how AI tracks get labeled. Also, watch UMG v. Suno in federal court in Massachusetts, where Suno’s fair use defense is getting a workout. A fair use ruling on music training data will likely result in pricing guidelines of training data for every modality.
