Stripe’s OpenRouter Deal

Bloomberg reports that Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, the AI model gateway, for more than $7 billion. Stripe said it does not comment on rumors or speculation, and OpenRouter declined to comment, so the transaction remains unconfirmed by the companies.

This deal follows Stripe’s January acquisition of Metronome, the usage-based billing company whose metering engine serves OpenAI, Anthropic, and Nvidia.

If the report is accurate, Stripe is buying one of the emerging control points in the AI economy. OpenRouter sits between applications and model providers. Stripe sits between businesses and money. Combining routing, metering, billing, payments, and model access is a good foundation for an economic operating layer for AI. Stripe would see which models deliver which workloads, what they cost, who pays for them, and how rapidly customers switch. That data would provide an unusually clear view of AI’s real economic activity along with a number of new places to build AI toll booths.

Even if that vision of the future isn’t quite right, model routers are an important component of fiscally responsible AI use. Routing tools, like OpenRouter, will become increasingly valuable as model differentiation compresses.

Every company needs a Claw strategy. Do you have one?
