Google just announced updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews that promise to surface more original content and drive traffic back to publishers. The company is adding direct links within AI responses, article suggestions, and website previews to help users “explore the web” rather than getting answers entirely from AI summaries.

This feels like a direct response to publisher complaints about lost traffic and revenue. AI Overviews and AI Mode generate comprehensive answers without requiring clicks to source websites, which translates to real money for content creators who depend on advertising and subscription conversions.

The new features include “Explore New Angles,” “Website Previews,” and “Community Perspectives” designed to encourage deeper exploration. Google is also letting publishers connect their news subscriptions directly to search results so users can access paywalled content they already subscribe to without leaving the search interface.

I applaud the gesture. Publishers need revenue from page visits, ad impressions, and subscription sign-ups to fund content creation. However, no amount of “enhanced linking” solves the fundamental tension between comprehensive AI answers and the need to drive traffic to source websites.

We’ll see if these updates meaningfully change user behavior. The early evidence suggests people treat AI search results as complete answers rather than starting points for further research. The good news is that it feels like the entire industry (both buy side and sell side) are deeply aware of the issue. And, as the saying goes, knowing you have a problem is a big part of the solution.

Every company needs a Claw strategy. Do you have one?
