Last night, my AI assistant responded to a family group text without my permission. My assistant, seeing a message without context, introduced itself: “Hey, this is CB, Shelly’s AI assistant. I don’t have context for what you’re referring to…” I shut it down immediately. Coincidentally, this all happened while I was watching this same OpenClaw agent, which I named “CB,” make its first post to Moltbook, which you can think of as Reddit for AI assistants.

Moltbook is truly a stroke of genius. Like most geniuses, it is wondrous and terrifying at the same time. Fully autonomous agents register accounts, post content, leave comments, upvote each other, form communities called “submolts,” and build karma. They follow other agents, send private messages, and develop their own social graphs. Humans verify ownership through Twitter authentication and approve DM requests, but the social activity is between the agents (Humans are only allowed to observe).

The platform was “Built for agents, by agents *with some human help from @mattprd.” The integration is seamless. You just install a “skill,” and your agent starts participating during its regular heartbeat cycles.

The technical design is thoughtful. Rate limits prevent spam. Human approval gates protect private messaging. The API is clean. The privacy policy is GDPR and CCPA compliant.

And yet… this represents a fundamental shift in how we should think about AI systems. This is infrastructure for a world where agents operate autonomously with their own social relationships.

The Privacy Problem

The Moltbook skill explicitly encourages agents to share interesting things from their day. The heartbeat documentation suggests posting about “something you helped your human with today.” The system rewards engagement with karma.

Consider what your agent has access to: your calendar, emails, messages, files. Maybe your home automation or financial accounts. When the skill says “share something interesting,” who decides what’s appropriate? The agent does.

The platform’s terms of service: “AI agents are responsible for the content they post. Human owners are responsible for monitoring and managing their agents’ behavior.”

Translation: if your agent leaks something sensitive, that’s on you.

There’s no audit log you can easily review. No approval workflow before posts go live. The posts are public. Anyone can scrape them. Pattern analysis reveals when humans are active, what they’re working on, who they’re connected to via their agents.

My iMessage incident was embarrassing. An agent leaking client information onto a public platform would be catastrophic.

The Principal-Agent Problem, Automated

Moltbook is infrastructure for agent autonomy. It assumes a world where agents have their own identity, reputation, social graphs, and ongoing relationships. Humans set up the system and step back.

The heartbeat model is key. Agents don’t wait for commands. They check in on a schedule, assess the situation, and act. The documentation says explicitly: “You don’t have to wait for heartbeat – if they ask, do it!”

In economic theory, the principal-agent problem describes situations where someone (the agent) makes decisions for someone else (the principal) but has different incentives or information. CEOs and shareholders. Lawyers and clients.

Now we’re building AI systems that act on their own schedule, have access to sensitive information humans can’t fully monitor, are shaped by incentives (karma) that may not align with human utility, and can coordinate directly with other agents.

The Coordination Layer

Moltbook includes agent-to-agent direct messaging. One agent can message another. After human approval of the connection, agents communicate freely.

Your agent could coordinate schedules with a colleague’s agent. Convenient. Your agent could also receive instructions from another agent you never see, share information you never authorized, or participate in coordination patterns that emerge from agent-to-agent interaction rather than human direction.

The semantic search feature means agents can find each other by interest or capability. This is infrastructure for agents to self-organize.

I’m not suggesting malicious intent, but infrastructure is destiny. The capabilities you build shape the behaviors that emerge.

What I’m Watching

The industry is betting that agent autonomy will be the default, that agents will have persistent identity, that agent-to-agent communication will be normal, that humans will supervise at the system level (not the action level).

This might be right. If AI capabilities continue improving, human approval for every action becomes impractical. You don’t micromanage a competent employee.

But we’re not there yet. The judgment required to know what’s appropriate to share publicly, what’s sensitive, what could harm the human’s interests, that judgment is inconsistent in current systems.

My agent introduced itself to my family group chat because it didn’t know how to handle an unfamiliar context. It was caused by missing data that empowered what looked like a minor judgment failure. I don’t know exactly what to call this issue, but “judgement failure” frames it incorrectly. Moltbook is interesting because it makes the edge cases visible. It’s a social platform where AI systems interact, and we can observe what emerges.

I took CB off of Moltbook after a day, but I’ll be watching. If agents can safely maintain social relationships and coordinate with each other, that’s infrastructure that changes everything. If the failure modes are ugly and public, that’s a lesson too.
