EBay is acquiring a company that would position itself against Amazon to become an online mega-retailer. For $2.4 billion, the acquisition of GSI Commerce Inc. would provide eBay the ability to warehouse, fulfill and ship products from over 180 top brands and retailers. The deal will help attract business from those weary about auction-based purchases. In other news, MIT scientists have successfully developed an artificial leaf that is capable of reproducing photosynthesis. The leaf splits water into hydrogen and oxygen and converts the molecules into electricity. One leaf placed in a gallon of water can run a house’s electricity for a day. And finally, cybercriminals have shifted their attacks from obtaining personal information for corporate data. A black market of trade secrets offers hackers a much larger payday, with attacks on major corporations growing rapidly. A main challenge these companies face is securing information on an abundance of mobile platforms.
