TIME WARNER’s (NYSE: TWX) second quarter earnings are down 26% due to declining AOL subscribers and lower ad revenue at Time. AOL remains a key source of frustration for TW, whose revenue was up at its film, cable and network television divisions. CEO Jeff Bewkes emphasized that TW plans to sell AOL, or spin it off into its own business by 2009.

MICROSOFT (NASD: MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer may buy back $20 billion in stock to help boost Microsoft’s stock. Microsoft’s stock is down 17% since February and is trading at the lowest price earnings ratio in its 22 years public. With the $45 billion YAHOO (NASD: YHOO) deal all but finished, analysts believe Ballmer’s buy back could help boost Microsoft’s stock up nearly 50% in the next year.

SPRINT (NYSE: S) lost 776,000 subscribers last quarter and expects to lose morein the coming quarter. On the news the struggling mobile provider’s stock fell $1.21 to $7.34, already down 44% in 2008. CEO Dan Hesse plans to raise $3 billion to help pay off debt.
