MGM (NYSE: MGM) CEO Harry Sloan wants to bring TOM CRUISE’s UNITED ARTISTS under the control of MGM’s Mary Parent. Sources close to Sloan say he thinks Cruise and partner Paula Wagner “don’t know what they’re doing.” Sloan wants to take over UA in part because of the $500 million in funding the Cruise venture received from MERRILL LYNCH.
INTEL (NASD: INTC) will announce remote technology that will allow users to retrieve files from a sleeping computer over an Internet connection. Remote Wake will run on new Intel based computers and can wake a computer from “sleep” mode when a phone call or instant message is received. Intel is also working with PANDO to stream television from an awakened computer.
TIME WARNER (NYSE: TWX) is lobbying the SUPREME COURT to keep the FCC’s indecency laws away from cable television. Unlike local TV and broadcast networks, cable networks do not fall under the FCC’s indecency rules, however, the FCC has been avid about extending their reach to cable. TW makes the case that v-chips and similar technologies are more than capable of keeping children away from indecent content.
