AppleAn email offering a $40 check from Apple and a discounted data plan from AT&T may raise spam alarm bells. But, this time, it’s not a scam. An email sent out this week notified early purchasers of the iPad with 3G connectivity about a possible settlement in a long-running class action lawsuit regarding Apple and AT&T’s promotion of an “unlimited” data plan during the first few months after the iPad’s release. The problem emerged when AT&T decided to scrap the unlimited data plan because of bandwidth constraints. As part of the settlement, eligible consumers receive a $40 check and a $20 discount on AT&T’s 5 gigabyte-per-month data plan, which currently goes for $50 per month.  The offer is only available to people who purchased or ordered the iPad before or on June 7, 2010.
