YAHOO is postponing their annual shareholders meeting. The decision comes as board member Edward Kozel resigned and Yahoo nominated the other 9 directors for re-election in the face of CARL ICAHN’s proxy fight. Icahn has already selected his board members, which include Frank Biondi and Mark Cuban.
GOOGLE co-founder Larry Page is still pushing for public access to white space. The Google co-founder traveled to Washington to urge the FCC to utilize the wireless spectrum for free, unlicensed use. With the age of analog television ending in February 2009, the slivers of wireless spectrum designed to prevent broadcast disruptions could soon be available to aid developing wireless networks.
A $51.8 billion leveraged buyout of BELL CANADA has been squashed by an appeals court. The unforeseen ruling has put the largest leveraged buyout in history at risk. In response, Bell Canada has issued an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada and will extend the closing date for the buyout to June 30.
LENOVO more than doubled its profits in the fiscal fourth quarter, aided by strong international sales in China, Europe and the Middle East. Despite a slowing US economy, the computer manufacturer reported a profit of $140 million in the fiscal fourth quarter, up from $60.3 million a year ago. Lenovo, who showed 21% overall growth in the first quarter of 2008, is the fourth largest PC manufacturer in the world.
CONGRESS is close to resolving a year long debate over whether or not telecommunications companies should get immunity for cooperating with government surveillance. If reached, the deal would direct offenders to a secret national security court. While the deal has been gaining support from all sides, it could face have a problem becoming a law if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi doesn’t allow it to reach the floor.
