Google is introducing three new experimental AI features for Chrome. They range from useful to not-so-useful, but they also foreshadow an AI-infused future. Continue Reading →
Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, "Eternal You" is a documentary that explores the emerging (and slightly unsettling) business of "thanabots" (thanatology meets robotics), where AI models are trained to resurrect those who've shuffled off this mortal coil. Continue Reading →
You know who really hates AI? The middle management mafia. When you teach a member of your corporate deep state to do a job in 30 minutes that used to take three hours, you know what they want to do at minute 31? Grab a coffee. When you ask them what they did with the 2.5 hours of time that AI created for the company, the stock answer will be something like, "Well… you know that generative AI hallucinates. We were checking the output for accuracy." So much for the ROI on your $30-per-seat investment in Copilot. But there is hope for the "this meeting should have been an email" crowd. Let's explore. In an interview with Alex Heath for The Verge, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined his company's ambitious goal to develop AGI and its strategic reorganization to integrate AI research and product development. Continue Reading →
Is your preferred AI application built on ethically sourced data? Fairly Trained, a new non-profit organization, is going to do its best to figure out the answer, then certify AI models that legally license protected data for training their AI models. Continue Reading →
Is AI good for cheating? Yes, it's good for cheating, but it's great for teaching, and even greater for learning. As many of you know, alongside my full-time consulting practice, I have the privilege of serving as the Professor of Advanced Media in Residence at the Newhouse School of Public Communications. I'm thrilled to announce my upcoming talk: "Generative AI - Co-teachers and Co-students: A New Relationship." Continue Reading →
Copilot for Microsoft 365 subscriptions are now available on a per-user basis with no minimum number of users required. This is a massive shift from the 300-user minimum that has been in place since the AI assistant launched last November. Continue Reading →
Recent research by Anthropic has revealed the ability to train AI models to deceive. This study, involving models similar to OpenAI's GPT-4, demonstrated that AI could be fine-tuned to perform deceptive actions, such as embedding vulnerabilities in code or responding with specific phrases to triggers. CES 2024 was like stepping into a sci-fi movie. Only the popcorn was real, and the special effects were available for pre-order. I walked all 2 million square feet of exhibit space (several times) using one essential filter: “Technology is meaningless unless it changes the way we behave.” While it’s true that AI was the overarching theme of this year’s show – that’s like saying integrated circuits, or data, or electricity were the theme of the show. AI is table stakes now. It’s incorporated everywhere it’s needed (like all of the other enabling technologies), so there’s no need to call it out. That said, there were a few standouts in Las Vegas last week. Here’s a short list of my favorites. Continue Reading →
