YouTube is introducing a policy change that will require creators to label AI-generated videos, with a heightened emphasis on music content. The platform’s approach differentiates between general AI content and AI-generated music.

For the former, creators must label “realistic” AI-generated videos, a requirement crucial for sensitive topics. The specifics of what constitutes “realistic” content are yet to be detailed, with further guidance expected next year.

For music, the policy is stricter. AI-generated content that mimics an artist’s unique singing or rapping voice will face stricter scrutiny. Exceptions for parody or satire, common in other content forms, will not apply here. This means AI covers of songs could be subject to takedowns by music labels, barring their use in contexts like news reporting or critique.

YouTube’s policy also allows individuals to request the removal of videos that simulate their likeness, with considerations for parody, satire, and public figure status. However, the platform’s capacity to effectively identify unlabeled AI-generated content remains a question, given the current limitations of detection tools.

This move by YouTube reflects a broader effort to balance intellectual property protection with the evolving landscape of digital content creation. It underscores the complexities platforms face in moderating AI content, as technological advancements outpace legal and policy frameworks.

Some will see this as a victory for IP owners. It is, but only in a narrow sense. If you spend a few minutes learning about the way YouTube, Spotify, and other large streaming services pay content creators, this move is not going to be any more effective than nutrition labels on candy.
