We already knew GM was making big bets on electric propulsion. The Chevy Volt marked a huge step into the field as the first major release of a so-called plug-in hybrid into the portfolio of a major automotive manufacturer. Now it appears the company will be doubling-down on the efforts… and aiming its sights squarely on Tesla — the wildly successful startup automaker that has made a major splash selling a stable entirely comprised of fully electric cars. The company has said it is in the process of developing an electric vehicle with a range of 200 miles and at a price tag of only $30,000. If successful, that would be a major advance, and come in well below Tesla’s cheapest offering, The Model S. That car, a competitor with the likes of BMW and Mercedes, starts off at a base price of $62,000 and returns a range of 232 miles. The company has said, however, that it plans on releasing increasingly high-volume and affordable models as their business develops. So can GM make a major play here? What do you think?
