Hurricane Sandy in NYC
Each week, Team Shelly Palmer sends me a prompt for this column, focusing on a topical event or idea, which I then explore in regards to the future. This past week, the last week of October 2012, I received no prompt. I hadn’t really expected to. It’s been a hard week on the east coast Continue Reading →
Megaupload
While serial self-publicist Kim Dotcom was re-igniting the submarine cable debate in New Zealand, the Electronic Frontiers Foundation’s (EFF’s) case trying to recover files on behalf of a former Megaupload user Kyle Goodwin took a new twist. The EFF has been in court trying to gain access to the servers seized by the Feds last year, Continue Reading →
Windows 8
Windows 8 is rife with features and behaviors that conspire to perplex even the most experienced PC users. Not all of them are bad, per se, but few of them are immediately intuitive. Making matters worse, the OS was primarily designed for touch control, and as a result, many mouse and keyboard commands feel like Continue Reading →
Saturday Night Live
Hackers appear to have apparently infiltrated and defaced several NBC Web sites, including the page for “Saturday Night Live.” The page’s usual content was replaced with a message that the site had been hacked by “pyknik” and scrolling text with the nursery rhyme “Remember, Remember The Fifth of November Gunpowder and Treason Plot.” The message also Continue Reading →

The 32GB Wi-Fi is $429, while the 64GB is $529. The Wi-Fi plus cellular versions are $459 (16GB), $559 (32GB), and $659 (64GB). The Continue Reading →
Apple Apology
As with the apology that appeared on Apple’s web site, this “apology” isn’t called an apology and doesn’t contain the word “sorry” or anything vaguely similar. It’s a small, short, factual summary of the case in which Samsung was found not to have copied Apple’s iPad design, along with a link to the ruling we Continue Reading →
Titan
Titan, the supercomputer introduced by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), is on track to be the world’s fastest. At least until the next one comes along. It can handle over 20,000 trillion calculations a second. That’s the equivalent of seven billion people carrying out three million calculations per second. You Continue Reading →
