China is working on installing a network of up to 500,000 surveillance cameras within the country. Officials claim that they will be used to prevent crime, but activists are worried that they will only contribute to political unrest. Western companies like Cisco Systems have agreed to help deploy the project. In other news, South Korea plans on digitizing educational materials for its entire primary school curriculum by 2015. Tablet PCs will be used instead of textbooks, with the government spending $2.4 billion on completing the mandate. Samsung is expected to manufacture the tablets. And finally, Verizon has confirmed that it will switch to tiered data pricing starting July 7th. Two gigabytes of data will now run you $30 a month, with another two gigabytes for mobile hotspot use at an additional $20. If you already pay for mobile hotspot use, you will be charged $30 per month for unlimited use.
