I’m off to do a fireside chat with Alvin Bowles about AI at Meta’s NA Agency Summit this morning, but I must acknowledge the New York Mets’ nail-biter win yesterday with Francisco Lindor’s 2-run blast in the 9th sending the team into the playoffs.
I have a bit of a history with the Mets. In July 1986, the Mets were 27 games ahead and the Pennant was a shoe-in. The team was destined for greatness, and advertising legend Jerry Della Femina and two of his senior executives (Bob Sherman and John Olken) commissioned me (I was known professionally as Shelton Leigh Palmer then) to compose and produce an official theme song and direct and produce a music video for the team. The song “Let’s Go Mets” (aka “Let’s Go Mets Go!”) became the official song of the world champion 1986 New York Mets. It was a gold record and a triple platinum video. (See if you can spot the two seconds in the video that features me and the production crew. Hint: I have a full head of hair.)
I rarely talk about my early career as a composer/producer and writer/director, but yesterday’s Mets win really brought back a flood of wonderful memories.
