AT&T Will Offer Wi-Fi Calling in 2015

AT&T will embrace Wi-Fi calling in 2015. That’s according to Ralph De la Vega, CEO of the company’s mobility and enterprise business. AT&T has long been a proponent of Wi-Fi, already partnering with companies to offer public Wi-Fi areas for customers, he said, adding that he sees Wi-Fi calling as a compliment to its core service. He doesn’t believe his network needs Wi-Fi for support. “We don’t have a burning desire or need for coverage,” de la Vega said at an investor conference. “Other operators with less coverage may pursue it more aggressively.” The comment about “other operators” is a not-so-veiled reference to T-Mobile, which made a lot of noise about Wi-Fi calling and texting now that Apple and iPhone 6 supports the technology. When Apple threw up a slide on Wi-Fi calling at its iPhone 6 launch event, T-Mobile was the only US carrier that popped up.
