Report: Apple Plans to Discontinue Production of the iPad 2

The iPad 2 was released in March of 2011, and has since managed to maintain a place in Apple’s product lineup through the release of no fewer than five additional tablets. The third- and fourth-generation iPads have already come and gone, and now AppleInsider reports that Apple is finally ready to discontinue the iPad 2 as well. There’s no mention of just when this is set to happen, but I say it’s about time. The iPad 2 uses Apple’s A5 processor, which is the same chip that powers the iPhone 4s. After three years, it’s definitely starting to feel a little long in the tooth, especially when running iOS 7. The iPad 2 is also Apple’s last full-size tablet not featuring a retina display. I might be spoiled from looking at lots of pixel-rich screens over the last few years, but the iPad 2 looks almost harsh by comparison. That’s not to say it isn’t a good tablet.
