CES 2024 Day 0

CES by DALL-E
Technology is meaningless unless it changes the way we behave. So far, I’ve found some super interesting new tech that I will write about after the embargoes are lifted and CES is officially underway. Continue Reading →
Midjourney Graffiti Computer
Yes. This is another article about ChatGPT. But it is also career advice for those of you who love ChatGPT, hate it, fear it, think it's a fad, and wish everyone would stop writing about it and those who are simply not paying attention. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, I want you to think about the following. Continue Reading →
Midjourney Second Empire Home
Synthetic media, sometimes referred to as "deepfake" technology, is the use of AI and machine learning to generate realistic, digital media such as images, videos, and audio. This technology is already revolutionizing the creative process as both artists and artisans conscript AI-coworkers for production assistance. But in the coming months, we are likely to see this technology evolve into Generative Synthetic Media (GSM) which we will define (for this essay) as data-driven synthetic media (created in near real time and surfaced in place of traditional media). When fully achieved, GSM will revolutionize human communication. This is a bold claim, so it requires bold evidence. Let's review. Continue Reading →
Midjourney - boy looking towards the future
I have two slides at the end of most of my presentations. One is my investible theses for the upcoming year and the other is stuff that has my attention. As we head into 2023, I thought it might be fun to look at a deck from 2018 and see if I got any of it right five years ago. I'll let you be the judge. Continue Reading →

The Employee Crisis

stepping stones
There is a significant shortage of employees in the United States. One popular explanation suggests that the pandemic caused a massive realignment of personal values. Some are calling it the "great resignation." Another popular explanation suggests that average Americans are disincentivized to return to work due to overzealous government benefits. Which is correct? There probably isn't a single satisfying sound bite explanation, but this past week, I got schooled by my clients and my students and it made me think deeply about how we will adapt to the new normal. Corporate Zoomicide

Video Conference
Corporate Zoomicide is the career-limiting choice forced on WFH employees when a company really just wants everyone to be back in the office. Over the next 18 months or so, managing the ergonomic and technological changes posed by a split (on-premises/off-premises) workforce will be difficult and stressful, but adapting your corporate culture to set your hybrid workforce up for success may prove even more challenging. Net Neutrality in 3 minutes

Hierarchy of Needs Revised
Net Neutrality is a nickname for a set of rules designed to govern your access to the Internet. In the next three minutes I'm going to prove to you why Net Neutrality is important and give you enough facts to argue your own case for or against it. Continue Reading →
Online Meeting
The speed of information is directly equated to economic success. If you learn something before your competitor does and you have the tools to make the knowledge actionable, you are almost always going to profit from it. So, while it’s true that “knowledge is power,” the true power comes from the speed with which you can create information asymmetry in a transactional environment. This is the goal of our new online innovation briefings. Continue Reading →
